Stretta

Hillcrest

Map Call Web

Still embodying ‘simple fresh Italian’, the Cafe uses authentic Italian flour, fresh homemade tomato sauce and a wood-fired oven, combined with a new artisanal brand of coffee, while the bar area focuses on craft beers, a small wine and craft whisky selection.

I love that the authentic, rustic fare is affordable and that Chef Greg Clelland varies the menu weekly. There’s a sunny verandah for breakfast to be enjoyed on – some favourites include balsamic tomato paninis and the muesli and greek yoghurt or mixed berry smoothies.

Their new interior is warm and spacious with the same signature minimal palette of natural materials and some clever tiling – the brainchild of interior architect Kevin Boyd, whose keen eye for simplicity and detail extends to the menu and website design.

Corner Café

Glenwood

Map Call Web

At the intersection of Brand and Cromwell Streets in Glenwood, is Durban’s favourite Corner Café. Started a few years ago by chef extraordinaire, Anna Savage and restaurateur veteran, Judd Campbell, the little neighbourhood eatery has gone from strength to strength over the years, redefining and refining itself into its current guise, that of an eco-restaurant.

For the last few years, The Corner Café has been in Judd’s hands, and the green transition has taken place under his lead. In short, The Corner Café aspires to be a model of sustainability as far as possible, whilst still serving the best coffee in town.

The Café menu is seasonal, with perennial favourites like Marmite Dippy Eggs and rainy day soups. Coffee is a big deal too; in fact it’s more like a full-blown love affair. The Love Coffee blend was specially sourced and blended by Judd in conjunction with Durban roastery Colombo, and comprises a mix of fair trade Burundi Kavungangoma, Malawi Mapanga Estate and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe beans.

Freedom Café

Map Call Web

Housed in a converted red shipping container with a glass extension, this spot is the brainchild of Neil Roake and offers a detailed expression of his expertise in the worlds of food and design. The place bursts with quirky details from ceramic sausage dog salt and pepper holders to wire lampshades. Mirrored walls boast Marge Simpson and other crazy hairdos that sit above your reflection when seated and a roll of XXX mints accompanies the bill.

You’ll find organic salads, scrumptious open sarmies, light starters and fuller mains on the menu alongside a mean selection of pastries. The coffee is top notch and you can pick up one of Neil’s recipe books while you’re at it.

You’ll be sorry not to visit this awesome little place.
